We’re bombarded with health messages from all angles. The government tells us to eat five a day (whilst flittering between work and the gym to squeeze in the 30 minute quota of exercise). On social media we see celeb goddesses who so easily ‘Live clean’ (whilst you need to get on Google to figure out what some of those ingredients are).
Does it really have to be this hard?
I don’t think so – and more to the point, I know that it doesn’t have to be an unappetising chore.
Green fruit and veg is just about the most nutrient and vitamin rich of foodstuffs around. Take the humble cabbage – chock full of vitamin K and anthocyanins – excellent for brain power, the prevention of nerve damage and even for providing protection from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Then there’s spinach – turns out, we could learn a thing or two from Popeye, as this veg features: Niacin and Zinc, Dietary Fibre, Protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Vitamin K, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Copper and Manganese. Phew! What a wonder-veg.

Here’s all that you need for a green-rich diet from week to week:
Herbs – Basil isn’t just for your Italian, just like mint isn’t only for your mojito, herbs are a wonderful way to add greens while adding unique flavours to your creations. Experiment and see what you can come up with!
Romaine Lettuce – Known to lower cholesterol and be high in vitamin C, this one is a good choice and there is no bitter after taste.
Kale – Not my personal favourite if I am honest although it is packed full of nutrients, high in iron and high in fibre.
Baby Spinach – My favourite choice, as you really wouldn’t know its there!. I personally choose to plump for organic greens, as the price difference between these and the regular version is relatively small. However we all have budgets to stick to, so just buy the greens you can for your budget.
These are what I consider hidden gems – but the secret is working them into your diet in way that makes you look forward to eating (or rather) drinking them. Now I’m not talking a full blender of greens – I’m saying that there are many ways to hide these green gems in smoothies without compromising the indulgent taste!
Porshn was born from my love of creating recipes that feel as though I’m spoiling myself, in the process nourishing my body from the inside out, with smoothies that I actually love to drink. When needs must, sometimes I do occasionally down something to get those nutrients in, although day to day, I hide those greens amongst the good stuff. So, let’s get started with a single recipe for a creamy dessert like smoothie, yum!
BANANA, BERRY, PROTEIN SMOOTHIE
1 Cup Frozen Berries
1 Frozen Banana
1 Cup Baby Spinach
3 Tbsp. Shelled Hemp Seeds
3 Tbsp. Protein of Choice
1 /12 Cups Coconut Water
1 Revitalising Berry Porshn
Option – Throw in a handful of basil to give this smoothie a delicious twist!
Blend all ingredients together until smooth & creamy.
