I may be one of the rare few who love winter – snow, dark cosy nights in and the party season. What could be better? Unfortunately overindulgence and the tough winter weather can be hard on our skin – and the cold temperatures equally as unhelpful to our health and vitality.
Here we gain some expert insight into looking and feeling radiant all winter through, despite the odds being against us.
Q. What top tips do you have for remaining radiant through the darkest, coldest time of the year?
A. It’s simple – up your skin care game! Over winter our skin can become dry, dehydrated and sallow. There are two causes of this – dehydration and dead skin cells that build up. To redress this balance, you should clean your skin twice a day, apply a hydrating face mask twice a week (for essential vitamins and deeply nourished skin cells) and exfoliate or peel your skin once a week.
Complete this regime with a night cream or oil – this is a must as the night is the prime time for skin repair and restoration.
Q. So that’s our facial regime re-worked – how about skin care for the body?
Winter is a time to indulge your skin whilst bathing – be sure to exfoliate your skin in the shower or bath using a body brush or gloves 2/3 times a week – follow this with body oil.
Finally you should switch from body lotions to body butters for an extra boost of hydration.
Q. They say that beauty comes from within – what advice do you have when it comes to looking after our health from the inside, out?
Your immune system can benefit from an extra helping hand during winter. Essential vitamins for this task are A, C, B12 and D3 (which each come with an array of benefits for your skin). You can also overcome the potential for colds and flu by ensuring you get a little exercise (this tip needn’t mean a new gym routine – simply 30 minutes walking a day will do the trick).
Q. Great! What diet changes would you then recommend?
Rich green vegetables and supplements are diet essentials – packed full of nutrients they look after everything from your skin, to your cognitive functions. Couple these with plenty of water and you have the ideal combination for clear, dewy skin all season through.
That said, it can be tough to drink the recommended 2 litres of water each day when it’s so cold – if you find it difficult to drink water simply switch to hot water with lemon or herbal teas.
(Read the Porshn blog on Hidden Greens for deliciously working green veg into your daily diet).
Q. How can we hold onto our glow during the darkest, coldest time of the year?
Don’t overcompensate during winter with darker tanning products – go lighter for a naturally radiant look – light self-tan or gradual tanning products are perfect.
